Can Someone Else Drive My Car if They Are Not on My Insurance?

At Riviera Insurance, one of the most common questions we receive is about car insurance and whether someone else can legally drive your vehicle. Understanding the law and the specifics of your policy is essential to avoid serious consequences.

We set out to help you understand if, when, and how you can legally drive someone else’s vehicle.

The Law

It is UK law that a non-SORN car must have car insurance in place to drive on public roads.

If someone drives your car without valid insurance, both the driver and the car owner could face penalties. These penalties include fines, points on your licence, or even having your vehicle seized.

It is crucial to ensure that any driver has the appropriate insurance before they get behind the wheel.

Does My Car’s Insurance Cover Other Drivers?

Not by default. Standard insurance policies cover one driver in relation to one vehicle. Some policies include coverage for other drivers, known as a Driving Other Cars (DOC) clause. However, this cover is not the standard.

If you are planning to share a car, then you should contact an insurance broker to help you find the best possible policy for multiple drivers.

What If the Other Person Has Their Own Insurance?

You have several options available to you if you are planning to share a car. If someone has their own car insurance, they may be covered to drive other vehicles, but only if their policy allows it. They must check with their insurer to confirm whether they are insured to drive your car. It is worth noting that the cover on offer will be limited to Third Party, Fire and Theft only.

In most cases, unless they are specifically insured to drive other vehicles, they will not be covered.

Adding Someone to Your Policy

You can add a named driver to your car insurance policy for short or long-term use. This is often the simplest and safest option to ensure full coverage.

Named drivers benefit from the same level of cover as the main policyholder, though terms may vary. Check with your insurer for any impact on premiums or no-claims bonus protection.

Using Temporary or Short-Term Insurance

Short-term or temporary car insurance policies are useful when someone only needs to borrow your car for a brief period.

These policies typically offer comprehensive cover and can last from an hour up to a month. They provide peace of mind without affecting your main policy or no-claims discount.

Make sure the temporary policy is active before allowing anyone to drive your car.
