What is Day / Short-Term Car Insurance?
Day and short-term car insurance, often referred to as temporary car insurance, provides flexible, short-duration vehicle coverage in the UK. It is a standalone policy that allows an individual to insure a car for a period ranging from just one hour up to 28 days, offering a convenient solution for temporary driving needs without altering the vehicle owner’s annual insurance policy.
A primary advantage of this type of insurance is that it is entirely separate from any existing policies on the vehicle. This means if the temporary driver needs to make a claim, it will not impact the car owner’s No Claims Discount (NCD).
Driver and Vehicle Eligibility: The driver will need to be between 18 and 75 years old and hold a valid UK or EU/EEA licence. The insurance policy allows coverage for vehicles of a value from £500 to £60,000.
What Does Day / Short-Term Insurance Cover?
Similar to standard car insurance, learner driver policies are offered at three main levels:
Third-Party: This is the minimum legal requirement and covers injury or damage to other people and their property.
Third-Party, Fire and Theft: This includes third-party cover and also protects against the car being stolen or damaged by fire.
Comprehensive: This offers the highest level of protection, covering all of the above, plus damage to the car the learner is driving, regardless of who is at fault.
Who is Day / Short-Term Car Insurance for?
- Borrowing a Car: For individuals needing to borrow a car from a friend or family member for a short period.
- Emergency Situations: To drive a different car home in an emergency.
- Vehicle Collection/Delivery: Insuring a newly purchased vehicle to drive it home from the seller or dealership.
- Sharing Driving on a Long Trip: Allowing a friend or family member to share the driving on a road trip.
- Test Drives: For private vehicle sales where the potential buyer wants to test drive the car.
- Courtesy Cars: When a garage provides a courtesy car that does not come with its own insurance.
